Spyware is a continual problem for anyone operating the windows system, which is pretty much everyone who owns a computer, granted there are a lot of mac users and unix system users but they represent a tiny percentage. Although system restore does not usually wipe such things, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The ultimate way of getting rid of spyware, and this way is more often than not, far better than any paid methods, is.....yes you guessed it, the full reformat and reinstall of your computer's entire operating system. Now, dont panic, it is an extreme measure but look at it this way, most of the process is automatic, just a few clicks of the mouse and a few hours of your time, your pc will literally fly like the wind when you start it up again and of course, there will be no trace of adware or spyware. JUST MAKE SURE YOU BACK EVERYTHING UP before you do.

In future, take a little more caution before you click an add close button, if the little cross in the top right corner still keeps your on screen arrow turned into a hand, the whole thing is an active link to something not entirely trustworthy.
